I’m Fort Myers Bound

Fort Myers Theatre

I’m heading to Fort Myers later this week to see Florida Rep’s production of Around the World in 80 Days. Don’t just take my word for it. It’s also on Broadwayworld.

“Florida Repertory Theatre has announced that Mark Brown, the critically acclaimed author of Around the World in 80 Days, will visit Fort Myers this weekend to see Florida Rep’s production of his play.”

See?

I’ll also be doing some audience talkbacks. Again I defer to Broadwayworld.

“The award-winning author will participate in discussions with the cast and audience following the 8pm performance on Friday, Feb. 20 and following the 2pm matinee on Sunday, Feb 22.”

And here’s a quote for my mom.

“Because of the success of Around the World in 80 Days, Mark Brown is one of the most produced playwrights in America.”

You see mom? I’m not just lying in bed all day. Well, not anymore.

Edison Festival of Light

But here’s my favorite part of the press release.

“In addition to seeing his play and talking to Florida Rep audiences, Mr. Brown is excited to participate in Fort Myers’ legendary Edison Festival of Light Grand Parade and festivities surrounding the parade.”

Yep. I had never heard of the Edison Festival of Light until Florida Rep invited me to Fort Myers for a visit. It’s a huge honkin’ celebration. It spans three weeks!

The Edison Pageant of Light started in 1938. In 1988 the powers that be kicked out “Pageant” and replaced it with “Festival.” Sorry Pageant.

Fort Myers

I’ll be there on the best weekend. There’s a Mutt Strut, Crafts on the River, a 5-k race, a parade celebration, which is not to be confused with the Grand Parade. The parade is a two-hour celebration and is followed up with fireworks. Fort Myers knows how to celebrate Thomas Edison.

I’m going to take in the whole damn thing. I’m even running in the 5-k. I want to borrow someone’s dog and do the Mutt Strut. I’m sorry I’ll be missing the Florida Cracker Dinner. However, I’m hoping to make it to Cracker Barrel for some chicken ‘n dumplin’s, biscuits, and all the sweet tea I can drink.

If you’re in the Fort Myers area come on out and see Around the World in 80 Days and enjoy the Edison Festival of Light with me.
