Around the World With Long Beach Playhouse

Long Beach Playhouse is in the midst of a lovely run of my play Around the World in 80 Days.

When I wrote the play, I wanted it to be a show that both adults and kids could enjoy. I grew up on the Marx Brothers and Monty Python, so I wanted to bring that kind of comedy to the show. I wanted it to be a fun evening at the theatre with a lot of theatre magic. The kind of show you could only see in a theatre.

So with that mind, the reviews of the Long Beach Playhouse production make me very happy.

“‘Around the World in 80 Days’ also is a rare theatrical offering that adults and kids can enjoy together.”

“It is not only appropriate for schoolchildren but also should be essential viewing for them. On opening night, a child in the front row was rapt throughout.”

This makes my happy beyond belief.

Ot course it’s hard to rid myself of my own vanity so I appreciate this quote:

[Verne’s] lighthearted adventure has inspired various film, radio and television adaptations. There are a number of stage versions. The best of these is Mark Brown’s ingeniously entertaining take on the classic.”

And this quote, which pretty much only my publishers will appreciate because of an incident we had to deal with earlier this year, makes me feel vindicated:

“The script is less chauvinistic, more feminist than might be expected.”
