Best Christmas Songs – Love For Christmas

Love for christmas the gems

Oh how I love the song “Love For Christmas” by The Gems.

The Gems was a Chicago-based group from the early 1960s and featured a very young Minnie Riperton. Minnie went on to have a number one hit with “Lovin’ You” in 1974. The Gems were on the Chess Records label, started by a couple of Polish immigrant brothers with the last name of Chess. Go figure. Love For Christmas was written by Raynard Miner, who also wrote the Jackie Wilson hit “(You’re Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher.”

“Love For Christmas” is a terrific holiday song. It can be found on a fantastic cd called Have a Merry Chess Christmas. The cd includes Chuck Berry, the O’Jays, the Soul Stirrers, the Moonglows, the Meditation Singers, the Ramsey Lewis Trio, Rotary Connection, and one of my favorite groups, the Salem Travelers.

“Love For Christmas” has been on my Christmas song list for many years. I love those girl groups from the 60s and this has that classic girl group sound.

The Best Christmas Songs

I had all intentions of posting a favorite Christmas song each day in the month of December. I failed miserably. It’s halfway through the month and I’m just getting started. I plan to post a couple a day so I end up with not just my Top 10 Christmas Songs but my Top 25 Christmas Songs. I love this time of year and I love Christmas music. I’m all for Bing Crosby and Burl Ives, but my tastes lean towards the more offbeat Christmas Songs. I think they make for a superb Christmas play list. Put them on yours. You won’t be sorry.
